The plaque memorializes Hale, a Yale graduate, and notes that his hanging by the British — at 11 a.m. on September 22, 1776 — was “near this site.” The first-ever executed American spy, the 21-year-old captain’s reported last words — “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country” — would earn him everlasting renown. One of Hale’s fellow American officers described Hale’s athletic talents as “remarkable.” The officer also noted that in Manhattan, Hale could “follow a football and kick it over the tops of trees at the Bowery at New York (an exercise he was fond of)…”
